A Volatile First Quarter
2nd Quarter 2018
John Bogle, founder of Vanguard funds, recently remarked that he has never seen the likes of first quarter 2018's volatility in his 66-year career. With stunning intraday turnarounds, we saw the DJIA erase a 510-point decline to end up 240 points in one trading session. The VIX (the CBOE volatility index) which hovered around 10 for most of 2017, jumped to over 37 in early February, a 270% rise. Additionally, there were 23 days in the first quarter with moves of over 1% in the S&P 500 index. There have only been 13 such sessions going back over half a century.
